The Brydges Centre

Children’s Home

There is no such thing as an “orphan” or “street child” at the Brydges Centre. From the moment a child passes through the gates, they become a member of the Brydges Centre “Family!”

The residential children’s home serves 150 children who have been abandoned by their families or have been orphaned because of the death of parents or caretakers. The Brydges Centre also has relationships with local child welfare agencies that bring children to the home that have been victims of neglect, physical or sexual abuse, child trafficking, or have experienced other forms of trauma. These children find safety and love and may become lifelong members of the family if courts cannot locate safe family caregivers or if parental rights are terminated. 100% of the Home’s funding is provided by Brydges Centre supporters because no financial support is provided by the government.

“My prayer is that Brydges Centre continues to give all of our children a safe home, full of love and care. We also wish to give them social and emotional stability to enhance their growth and development, and give them all the support that they need through life.”
– Rosemary Eve Wafula

School

Education is a vital part of a child believing they are someone special with something very valuable to contribute to the world. Every single day children at the Centre are encouraged by the staff and teachers to dream, to focus on their studies, and to set their sights on attending a university or enrolling in the Brydges Centre Career Skills Institute to be all they can be.

The Brydges Centre School includes three levels of education: preschool, primary school, and grade school. The school facilities include 5 buildings with 12 classrooms that serve over 200 students from the Centre and community. Brydges Centre School students consistently rate in the top percentiles in national testing, which opens the doors to the most competitive high schools in a region where no public school is offered.

Skills Institute

The Skills Institute provides training for young adults in marketable career skills in hospitality, cosmetology, cell phone repair, and other fields. When attending a university isn’t a match for the gifts or passions of a young adult, they have the opportunity to try a number of possible career tracks to discover the direction they want to take in their work lives. In addition to achieving financial independence through a rewarding career, young people believe they can make valuable contributions to their communities.

The Skills Institute extends beyond the children of the Brydges Centre by enrolling tuition-paying students from the community. This helps make the program sustainable for the Centre’s young people, while teaching all students the value of career education.

Farm & Restaurant

The Centre operates a small farm with four greenhouses for growing produce for the children and our neighbors, as well as a simple restaurant that serves the local community.

On the farm, the children get to learn basics about agriculture and irrigation, and they enjoy raising and caring for the geese, turkeys, and rabbits.

The Centre’s restaurant provides three things: a place for hospitality interns from The Brydges Centre Skills Institute to receive hands-on training, additional income that can be reinvested in the Centre, and an inviting place for community members and local factory workers to purchase a nourishing meal. Currently, the restaurant operation is run by Centrine, a graduate of the Skills Institute. We are so proud of her!
